Cathedral Cove: Boat, Kayak or Walk?
The ways to Cathedral Cove compared: boat tours from Whitianga and Hahei, the kayak tour that lands on the beach, sailing and snorkel trips, and the walk. Time, start points and prices.
If you are already on the Coromandel, the boat is the easiest way to see Cathedral Cove: no uphill walk, no parking, and the coast on either side of the cove as well. Book Ocean Leopard - Cathedral Cove Boat Tours’ Whitianga: 2-Hour Cathedral Cove and Volcanic Coast Tour, from US$83 a person (checked November 2026). Pick the kayak if you want to land on the beach, and the walk if you want the beach for free and have the legs for it.
On the three dates we read, 27 November 2026, 20 January and 10 March 2027, the cruise was US$83.23 a person (checked November 2026). Arrive at the wharf 15 minutes before; you can cancel free up to 24 hours before.
Where the boats leave from

Two places. Whitianga Wharf, across Mercury Bay, is 7 km from the cove in a straight line, so the Whitianga boats make a coast cruise of it, with sea caves and islands on the way. Hahei Beach is close: the cove is about 5 minutes away by boat. The sailing catamaran leaves from Flaxmill Bay, between Cooks Beach and Whitianga.

The boat suits anyone who wants the cove without the climb. Glass Bottom Boat Whitianga, from US$77, adds the glass panels, and Mercury Bay Discoveries, from US$79, a snorkel and a warm shower (checked November 2026). Cave Cruzer Boat Tours, from US$83, runs an open-topped boat into caves and blowholes; secure your hat, as it cruises at 55 km/h on open water.
The kayak is the one trip here that lands at the cove. In Cathedral Cove Kayak Tours’ own words, “We are the only kayak company able to land at Cathedral Cove”; the Department of Conservation’s pages set no landing rules either way.
The walk is free, about 1 hour 30 minutes return and 5 km, with a long uphill section from the car park (Department of Conservation, checked November 2026). DOC closes it after heavy rain and under orange or red weather warnings for Hahei. How to get to Cathedral Cove has the parking and the shuttle.
On the water: the reserve rules
The cove sits in Te Whanganui-o-Hei Marine Reserve. Boats keep to 5 knots within 200 m of the shore and within 50 m of another boat or a swimmer, and there are no boat lanes separating boats, jet skis and kayaks from swimmers (Department of Conservation, checked November 2026). Fishing and taking shells or rocks are not allowed.
