Cathedral Cove Tides and Hot Water Beach
Why the tide matters at Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach, the two-hours-either-side-of-low-tide rule, where to find official tide times, and how the day tours plan around it.
The tide decides two things here. At Hot Water Beach you can dig a hot pool only for about two hours either side of low tide (Tourism New Zealand), and at Cathedral Cove high tide can cut the beach off from the track (Department of Conservation). We print no tide times: LINZ publishes the official predictions for Whitianga, the nearest port it covers. The easy way round it is a tour that plans by the tide, such as Cheeky Kiwi Travel’s Auckland: Cathedral Cove & Hot Water Beach Small-Group Tour, from US$144 a person (checked November 2026), whose Hot Water Beach option runs only on days the tide allows.
If your date shows no Hot Water Beach option, the other option visits other beaches and viewpoints instead. You can cancel free up to 24 hours before.
Hot Water Beach: two hours either side of low tide

Hot water rises through the sand near the rocks at the southern end of Hot Water Beach. Tourism New Zealand’s advice is to come two hours either side of low tide, when the sea is far enough out to uncover that patch of sand, and to bring swimwear and a spade, or hire one from a café nearby. Outside that window the hot sand is under the sea.
That gives you a window of about four hours around each low tide, and two low tides a day. Hot Water Beach is 6.8 km by road from the Hahei Visitor Car Park.

Cathedral Cove: the tide and the archway
On the Department of Conservation’s track page (checked November 2026), high tide can cut the beach off from the track, low tide gives you more beach and keeps you further from the cliffs, and you should not go into the rock archway when it is under water. A visit near low tide gives you the most room.
Where to find the tide times
Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) publishes the official tide predictions as yearly tables. The nearest port it covers is Whitianga: the 2026 table and the 2027 table. Hot Water Beach has no LINZ prediction of its own, so treat the Whitianga times as a guide and leave some slack either side.
How the day tours deal with it
- Cheeky Kiwi Travel sets its dates in advance by the tide: the Hot Water Beach option runs only when the tide allows, with spades supplied, and the other option goes to other beaches and viewpoints. On the three dates we read, one option was on sale and the other was not available (checked November 2026).
- Expedigo NZ keeps one itinerary and changes the order of the day to meet the low tide at Hot Water Beach, where it allows about 2 hours. It is from US$141 (checked November 2026).
The plan does not always work. Among the 350 most recent reviews of Cheeky Kiwi Travel’s day (the newest dated 31 October 2026, the oldest from March 2024), one in January 2025 says the group reached Hot Water Beach after the tide had come back in, and one in February 2026 that there was no stop at Hot Water Beach on their day.
Cathedral Cove or Hot Water Beach?
With one day, you can have both: the day tours from Auckland do, and they are 6.8 km apart by road. With a car, put Hot Water Beach in its low-tide window and fit the cove walk around it; with half a day, the cove by boat from Whitianga or Hahei avoids the tide question on the beach altogether. Boat, kayak or walk has the options.
