How to Get to Cathedral Cove

Getting to Cathedral Cove: why you cannot drive to the track, the free Hahei car park, the NZ$8 shuttle, the 5 km walk, the boats and kayaks, and the day tours from Auckland.

Updated November 2026

You cannot drive to Cathedral Cove: the car park at the start of the track, on Grange Road, is for drop-off and pick-up only. Park free at the Hahei Visitor Car Park at the village entrance, then walk or take the shuttle to the track, and walk about 1 hour 30 minutes return (Department of Conservation, checked November 2026). Without a car, the simplest way there is a day tour from Auckland: Expedigo NZ’s Cathedral Cove & Hot Water Beach with Lunch from Auckland, from US$141 a person (checked November 2026), collects you from your hotel.

Powerd by GetYourGuide

The day takes 12 hours with pickup at 19 Auckland hotels, and you can cancel free up to 24 hours before.

Cathedral Cove, the Hahei Visitor Car Park where the shuttle starts, and Hot Water Beach, 6.8 km by road from the car park.

Cathedral Cove lies north of Hahei village on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula. The Hahei Visitor Car Park, at the village entrance, is where the shuttle starts and where most visitors leave their cars. Hot Water Beach is 6.8 km by road from that car park.

By car

From central Auckland to the Hahei Visitor Car Park is 175.1 km by road; from Whitianga wharf it is 35.8 km. Then:

  • The Hahei Visitor Car Park at the village entrance is free, and run by the council. From it you walk or take the shuttle to the track (Thames-Coromandel District Council, checked November 2026).
  • Grange Road, at the start of the track, is drop-off and pick-up only, and you cannot park along Grange Road. Parking elsewhere in the village is, in the council’s words, “extremely limited”.
  • The Cathedral Cove Gateway Trail car park, 150 Lees Road, is paid parking (Department of Conservation; no price given).

The shuttle

Cathedral Cove Park & Ride runs the shuttle from the Hahei Visitor Car Park under contract to the council: NZ$8 return for adults, children 14 and under free, tickets bought on the day (Cathedral Cove Park & Ride’s page, checked November 2026). The page carries no date, so check the fare and the hours there before you go. When NIWA issues an orange or red weather warning for Hahei, the shuttles do not run (Department of Conservation).

The walk

On the Department of Conservation’s figures (checked November 2026), the walk to the cove and back is 5 km and takes about 1 hour 30 minutes, on an easy-to-intermediate track. From the Hahei Visitor Car Park to the start of the track is about 30 minutes more, with a long uphill section and little shade. The toilets are on the track, a 10- to 15-minute walk from the beach. Dogs are not allowed.

Three of DOC’s warnings are worth knowing before you set off. Do not visit during or straight after heavy rain, when the landslide risk is high. At high tide the beach can be cut off from the track, and low tide gives you more beach and keeps you further from the cliffs. Do not go into the rock archway if it is under water.

Is Cathedral Cove open? has DOC’s status as we last read it.

By boat or kayak

There is no walk if you come by sea. From Whitianga Wharf, Ocean Leopard - Cathedral Cove Boat Tours cruises 2 hours to the cove and back, from US$83 (checked November 2026). From Hahei Beach, Hahei Explorer Cathedral Cove Boat Tour takes an hour, from US$71, and Cathedral Cove Kayak Tours paddles there and lands on the beach in 3 hours, from US$108 (checked November 2026). The boats show the cove from the water. Boat, kayak or walk compares them.

Without a car

From Auckland, the day tours drive you there and back.
